If you can’t be bothered to read, maybe you shouldn’t use Facebook.

Let me start by apologizing, I will probably offend someone and that’s not my point.

BUT, if you can’t be bothered to read about Facebook’s privacy settings and attempt to understand them, MAYBE YOU SHOULDN’T USE IT!

What sparked my rant is the following post that’s been circulating regarding Facebook’s new Pilot program with Microsoft Docs, Pandora, and Yelp:

As of today, there is a NEW PRIVACY setting called “Instant Personalization” that shares data with non-Facebook websites and it is automatically set to “Allow.” Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites > Instant Personalization, and uncheck “Allow”. BTW if your friends don’t do this, they will be sharing information about you. please copy & paste.

There’s one little flaw in this, if you bother to read the page they’re referring to:

Allow select partners to instantly personalize their features with my public information when I first arrive on their websites.

The key word here is “PUBLIC”.  They’re sharing information with three companies that you’ve already made available to anybody with an internet connection and a web browser.  If you really think this is so terrible, try reading the terms of service on your email account.  That should give you a heart attack, unless you’re with a private company.   Or better yet, you should see how much info your computer sends to every website you visit.  Your IP address, browser type, screen size, screen colors, and more are all typically transmitted to a website.

Anyway, I digress. Now for the second part – “if your friends don’t do this, they will be sharing information about you.”   This is again addressed right on the settings page:

Please keep in mind that if you opt out, your friends may still share public Facebook information about you to personalize their experience on these partner sites unless you block the application.

Again, the key word here is ‘public’.  (Repeat rant)

So, here’s two ways to hide your info if you really don’t want it shared:

  1. Go to “Account > Privacy Settings > Personal information and Posts” and set everything to “Only Friends”.  Next, go to “Account > Privacy Settings > Contact Information” and set everything to “Only Me”. Then on to “Account > Privacy Settings > Friends, Tags, and Connections”, and again set everything to “Only Friends”. Finally, go to “Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites”.  Look at “What your friends can share about you”.  Uncheck everything.  You’re basically done, and fairly well hidden, but the second method here is probably the safer bet.
  2. Go to “Account > Account Settings > Deactivate Account”. Tell Facebook you don’t like having to read, and deactivate your account.  Now go play outside.

All in good humor :)
