Resources for Programmers and Web Designers
I’ve finally gotten around to re-sharing all my business / programming / web development bookmarks. They’re on the ‘Bookmarks’ page of this site. Each category has it’s own page with RSS feed, so please grab the feeds you like and I’ll try to add something each week.
Got a bookmark you think I should add? Hit me up on Twitter, FB, or Google+. Links are on...
Go buy this. Now. Before your ears bleed.

Is it 1984 yet?
Reasons I have lost all faith in our government.
Protests appear to be officially considered low-level terrorism.
They’re considering legislation to censor the internet.
The senate has passed legislation allowing the indefinite detention of US citizens without trial in the name of terrorism.
What scares me the most is that nobody seems to care.

The 40 Day Soul Fast Mobile App
This mobile app was really easy and fun to make. It was my first time working with Titanium from Appcelerator, and I have to say I’m hooked. It’s the first platform that’s actually made app development somewhat easy to understand.
Check out the app, and let me know what you think. Be sure to follow @destinyimage on Twitter, we might even give away a few free copies sometime!

Does Location Matter for a Tech Startup?
I’ve been working on a startup idea I’m calling FocalCore, a platform for building an online presence. One of the questions I’ve been struggling with is “Does location matter when recruiting an awesome team?”. While there seems to be strong opinions on both sides of the debate, I think I now know where I stand, thanks to my friend Daniel.
At this early stage of...

My New Project: FocalCore
If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ve probably heard me mumbling about FocalCore by now. I’m hesitant to share much beyond the project’s focus right now, because I’m paranoid that someone will beat me to it.
What I can comfortably say is this: it will put the power back in the hands of the user, the author, and the small business owner, rather than the website...

Windows and Linux simultaneously with VirtualBox
I’m more or less a Linux guy, but our office is mainly a Microsoft shop. I can make do with Windows for most things, but it seems like the more coding I do, the more I need a linux-based system. I finally got tired of working around issues and built a Linux Mint 11 virtual machine on VirtualBox. It’s running great, so now I have access to everything I need - Evolution groupware,...

Upcoming Conferences That Look Awesome
There are several conferences coming up that look really interesting for me. I’m hoping to be able to travel to one or more of them for work, but I’m having a really hard time deciding which one will be the most valuable for me. To that end, I thought I’d present the conferences and their benefits to you, and hopefully help myself in the process.

Update: The app has been taken off the market, but it was a good experience getting one published.

Collaborative Strategy
I recently picked up where I left off in “The New How” by Nilofer Merchant. It’s an excellent book (I highly recommend anybody involved in developing company strategy pick this up), and I’m looking forward to applying some of the principals discussed over the next few months. To that end, I made a little poster based on the seven responsibilities of a collaborative leader...

If you think mobile is the new direction everything is heading, you’re late to the race - better bury the accellerator and drift the curves, or prepare to lose.

Three takeaways from the Publishing Business...
1. Publishers must embrace digital, or risk losing a significant percentage of sales within 5 years. I think we can all agree digital media is going to begin to account for a significant amount of sales soon. Publishers need to have a strategy in place to make their content available where and when the consumer wants, or risk the rise of piracy and peer-to-peer sharing of their content just...
Publishing Business Conference #pbc2011
I’m part way through the second day of the Publishing Business Conference and Expo in NYC. So far, while I’ve liked several of the speakers, there don’t seem to be many new/radical thoughts being discussed. The good news, as my boss Jon Nori pointed out, is that many of our ideas and initiatives are being confirmed by the speakers and attendees here.
Overall, I think the...

Webmaster 1 - ScriptKiddies 0
Found a near-exploit in our website at work today, thanks to a script kiddie running an automated tool against us. While there wasn’t any danger to our server or data, I added a little piece of code to deter any future attempts. Anybody trying a similar exploit can now be auto-redirected wherever I choose, at the moment I’m being nice ;)

Greplin - Grep for Online Accounts
I’ve just begun using Greplin, and so far I like what I see. The concept, if you didn’t guess it from the name, is a search interface for your private data across several collaboration and social platforms. They’ve got a good privacy policy, promising not to sell/share your data, and it’s written clearly enough to make me feel comfortable with their service.
I’ve...

Geektool: Disk Space Monitor
Yet another Geektool, this time for monitoring disk space. The first disk is the local hard drive, the next is a connected network share.
#!/bin/bash
disk=$(df | grep "/dev/disk0s2" | awk '{print $5}')
disk="/: $disk"
if [ -d "/Volumes/Share/" ]; then
share=$(df | grep "/Volumes/Share" | awk '{print $5}')

The Result (network share not included...

Geektool: Gateway Monitor
Here’s another script I wrote for a Geektool widget. This one monitors your local network gateway. (not intended to handle multiple gateways)

printf "GW: $gw"
The Result:

Geektool: IP address monitor
On recommendation from a friend, I’ve started using Geektool. So far I’ve been creating nifty little system monitoring widgets by writing a few shell scripts. Here’s the first one I created, for monitoring the IPv4 address set on ethernet and wifi on my Macbook Pro:
#!/bin/bash
lan=$(ifconfig en0 | grep 'inet' | grep -v '127.0.0.1' | grep -v 'inet6' | awk '{ print $2}')
